Hikvision HM-TD2618-10/G0/T1A HeatPro thermal and optical bi-spectrum bullet camera

Inside this housing is exactly the same thermal sensor as the HeatPro turret: the same 160 × 120 vanadium oxide array, the same 25 millikelvin sensitivity, the same fire detection and the same temperature rules. What is different is the lens in front of it, and the difference is not subtle.

The turret runs a 1.8 mm thermal optic and sees 90 degrees. This one runs 9.7 mm and sees 18. Five times the focal length buys roughly five times the reach — a person detected at 100 metres rather than 20, a vehicle at 300 rather than 60 — and costs four-fifths of the width. That is not a better camera, it is a different job. The turret watches a bay. This watches a fence line, a tank farm boundary, a stretch of open ground where the interesting question is whether anything warm is moving across it in the dark.

The illuminator scales with the optics too: infrared and white light to 80 metres rather than 30, which is why this one wants 802.3at and 24 watts where the turret was content with 6.5.

What this camera actually covers

Two things to look for below, and the second one catches people out.

First, the two channels do not cover the same area. The optical lens is 24.6 degrees wide, the thermal one 18 — so a strip of what you see on the monitor sits outside the part that is actually watching for heat. Switch between them and the difference is obvious.

Second, and more expensive to get wrong: a 13.5 degree vertical field on a pole leaves an enormous blind zone at the base. Set the mounting height to five metres and watch the number. Everything closer than that is invisible to this camera, which is fine for a fence line seen from a distance and a serious problem if you also expected it to watch the gate directly underneath it.

Works with SmartGard.AI

Point a thermal camera down a fence line and it will find warm things, which at three hundred metres in the dark is most of the wildlife in the county. Every fox, every deer, every cat crosses the line and every one of them is, to the camera, a moving heat source of roughly person-like proportions. This is the reason so many perimeter systems end up switched off.

The system needs one thing from a camera: the ability to report that something happened. This one reports fire detection, temperature exceptions, line crossing, intrusion and region entry. SmartGard.AI reads the frame each trigger arrives with and judges it against rules written in your own words — and “a person on the fence line, not an animal” is a distinction a heat threshold cannot make and a reading of the scene can.

The fire side works the same way. Sunlight on a metal roof and a smouldering pallet are both hot; only one of them needs somebody woken up.
